The Process

1. This is paper that has been collected for recycling. It comes from industry, schools,     homes and offices, from across the country.
2. Now we’re in the big recycling plant at mpact. Here the paper is being     tipped into a vat where it is mixed with water and chemicals that turn into a slush.
3. The slush is now being cleaned several times to remove things like staples, thread and     grit which would spoil the new paper.
4. There is a special machine to remove the printer’s ink from the slush by a process using     water and soap. The soap makes bubbles which lift out the ink.
5. After the slush has been cleaned three more times, it is bleached and cleaned yet again.     From the recycling plant it goes to the machine which makes new paper.
6. There are many South African newspapers now printed on paper which contains 25%     recycled paper pulp. You’ve probably seen them in your own home.

Now you know what paper recycling is all about and how it’s done, I hope you’ll help me to recycle. Please collect paper in your home and ask your friends, relatives and neighbours to give you their unwanted newspapers and magazines. Bring these to school and put them into the Paper Bank ready for collection by mpact Recycling’s truck.
